Charlie posted the following on the now-functioning SOTW board today:
Thanks for all the kind thoughts and well wishes.
After two weeks at St Thomas' Hospital, I am briefly back home before returning for an operation.
As a result of various tests and scans, it has been established that I have badly furred-up arteries and a leaky heart valve which will be sorted out by surgeon Mr Graham Venn. What they call a triple by-pass operation.
He added on an email:
"No work in the meantime, and a rest period afterwards. Assuming the operation is successful, it will be some time before I am strong enough to do the things I've been accustomed to doing...."
I'm sure we all wish him a successful op, a speedy recovery and a long life full of renewed vigour. |

From Charlie today:
On Wednesday, I had a pleasant meeting with Graham Venn, the surgeon who will perform the heart by pass and valve repair.
Although I was hoping he would name the day for the operation, he is inclined not to rush into it and to wait a little longer until the preconditions are as good as can be hope for.
So I keep going for blood tests and take Warfarin in the reccommended amounts.
Being brilliantly cared for at home, I'm in reasonable spirits.
It's been frustrating that I am not yet fit enough to make new programmes for the BBBC World Service, but miraculously, the World Service has kept my World of Music slot alive by recycling previous programmes and, in some cases, rebroadcasting sessions first broadcast in the World on 3 slot at Radio 3.
Otherwise, I've been preoccupied with planning further compilations (Honky Tonk Vol 2 (for Ace) and Sound of The World Presesents Anywhere on This Road (for Warner Classics & Jazz).
Many thanks for all the kind words |
