Hello,
I'm sure I'm not the only one both amazed and slightly daunted by the sheer amount of music on Spotify, and invariably finding myself going round the same restricted circles of albums I know rather than digging out treats I've never before heard. So this thread, should you choose to accept it, is for us to post great fRooty albums we've found on Spotify. A random selection is below. I'll update it as and when, and please post your own findings below and I'll incorporate them into this top post.
Edit: Following some interesting discussions elsewhere on the forum, it's been brought home to me that the amount of money artists get from Spotify is paramount to nothing. I've therefore proposed a ethical guide to using Spotify, by agreeing that:
- I will use Spotify to discover new music.
- If I find myself listening to an album or track repeatedly on Spotify, I will reward the artist by buying it.
- I will continue to spend as much money on music as I did before Spotify.
- I will not buy one album over another because the other is available on Spotify.

Updated!
They have recently uploaded a whole loads of British folk music that wasn't on there before. Most excitingly, there's what looks like almost the entire Topic catalogue, including everything from all of Eliza Carthy's and the latest Martin Simpson, to all of the Voice of the People collection, the Radio Ballads, a short version of Three Score and Ten etc. etc. Looks like Beautiful Jo has just gone up too, so finally some Fernhill and Julie Murphy, plus Bella Hardy has put her albums on there too.

HMV have done it for Time Is Ripe as well. 40 years on, can't shake the curse . . .
If only you got royalties from all this free download stuff, I might get some of his by accident. Still, at least he can't get any of mine either. |

Hmmm, yes, I do sometimes wonder what the musicians featured make of Spotify. Presumably as a legal service you do in theory get some royalties for it, although I imagine that is likely to be pennies for anyone but the very top league of a minority interest like roots music. And I can't say honestly that I don't think it detracts from CD sales -I've certainly thought twice about getting an album knowing I can listen to it easily for free instead. I guess the upside is that it can make fans out of people that wouldn't normally hear the music, making the musicians a small amount of extra cash via Spotify (presumably getting a pittance for 100 people who wouldn't ever buy an album listening online is better than not making anything at all), and meaning that they might then go on to buy an album or go to a gig. I think if I was a musician I might put my back catelogue on Spotify and keep my latest release(s) for paying customers.
At the end of the day though, it's not really for me to decide what models the music industry should use, and as a listener I think it's an unprecedentedly invaluable resource. MySpace was all well and good in a limited, clunky sort of way, as is YouTube if you've got the time to wade through all the crap on there and wait for it to load. But Spotify is more than that, it's a vast, online, fairly well organised free library of recorded sound.
As an example, I'm off to Argentina on Saturday. Wanting to get in the mood I find my CD shelves somewhat lacking in Argentinian music, so I just look up Argentinian tango in the Rough Guide to World Music I picked up the charity shop the other day and follow it's advice to Astor Piazzola. Then I remember the fRoots article on Melingo. None of his albums on there but he's featured on a great compilation called Bar Tango of modern tango sounds that I'm listening to as I type.
Or, I'm just finishing off a long awaited article on the melodeon great Tony Hall. I've got some of his records to refer to, but with a bit of online research I find he also plays on a number of June Tabor albums, so I've been listening to them on Spotify.
Spotify could perhaps be even more relevant though for musicians. Imagine I'm a young folk singer looking for inspiration but somewhat low on funds. Low and behold, there's nearly the complete 20-CD set of Voice of the People from Topic available to listen to at my pleasure.
And at the rate they are adding music (even with the odd irritating subtractions too), it just gets better and better as a resource.
