Off you all go then, but remember
| Chris, making the rules, wrote: | | All you have to do is tell us your favourite fRooty record by an artist beginning with the letter P. Extras like runner-ups, not-really-relevant faves, lost Leaders and Lifetime achievement awards are all allowed, but you have to pick one winner of (broad) fRoots relevance. Albums, EPs, box sets, singles, best ofs and collections are all allowed - but no individual tracks (unless in the context of a single) and no multi-artist compilations. We go by library alphabetical, so by band names (excluding 'The'), or the surnames of individuals. If there's a person's name and band name we go by the surname - e.g. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes is an S, Jackie McShee's Pentangle is an M. And no jumping ahead - I get to start the new threads after at least a week to give everyone time to post and start some discussions! Try to limit your runners up to a reasonable amount - around five or so. |
And you might want to aide your memoire with a look at http://www.frootsmag.com/content/features/reviews_index/revs_ind_p.html |

On the basis of what's in my collection and what I can vote for, I'd have to agree with Diane on winner:
Pyewackett "Man in the Moon Drinks Claret" ... a CD which I've only added to the collection in the last month or so - how could I have missed that when it first came out?
Honourable mentions
Graham and Eileen Pratt "Borders of the Ocean"
Dory Previn "Mythical Kings and Iguanas" (harking back to college days there!) |

Runners-up:
Planxty - The Black Album;
Jimmy Power and Tony Ledwith - Irish Music from the Favourite - which should certainly go under the 'lost Leader' category;
Pata Negra - Blues de la Frontera;
Tommy Potts - The Liffey Banks.
Winner:
Tommy Peoples - An Exciting Session with One of Ireland's Leading Traditional Fiddlers - the best album Tommy has ever recorded and why it's never been re-released by the jobsworths at Larry Murphy's HQ is beyond me. |

Having trouble thinking of an outright winner, even though there's lots of good stuff. Perhaps one of the Planxtys - I'll go for Cold Blow & The Rainy Night seeing as it's got the wonderful Johnny Moynihan on it.
The rest:
Planxty - Well Below The Valley
Maddy Prior & June Tabor - Silly Sisters
Perlinpinpin Folc - can't remember the title but it's on a tape they share with a vocal group (something like Au Son de Voz), and which I must put onto CD if it hasn't perished in the 5 years since I last listened to it.
Dirk Powell, Tim O'Brien & John Herrmann - Songs From The Mountain
Philippe Prieur - Crue d'amour
Frederic Paris - Rue de l'oiseau
Ivo Papasov - Orpheus Ascending
Progmatics - Vaarallinen lehmankello / Lethal Cowbell
Primitifs du Futur - World Musette
Itzhak Perlman - 2 volumes of In The Fiddler's House (I had to get the klezmer in somewhere)
Lost Leaders:
The three already mentioned by Diane & Geoff |

Runner up:
Charley Patton – Screamin and Hollerin the blues
but any Charley Patton will do.
winner:
Baden Powell & vinicius de moraes: Os Afro-Sambas
Far and away the best thing Baden Powell ever did. And really it's more of a Vinicius de Moraes album than a Powell one. Not out-there in the 60s psychedelic way those crazy cats Os Mutantes are – more like a baroque pop, Brian Wilson take on samba form. South American trance music that Austen Powers could still do the shag to. Herb Alpert soundtracking a capoeira session. And recently reissued on a great CD paired up with pretty much the only other decent album Baden Powell ever made too. Bargain. |
