No problem staying within fRoots territory this week...

Winner:
Steeleye Span Ten Man Mop, or Mr Reservoir Butler rides again
Electric folk rather than folk-rock, I'd say, with song arrangements - such as Captain Coulston and When I was on horseback - which remain as good as it gets.

I must also give a big thumbs up for Below the Salt, the LP which almost literally turned me into a folkie overnight, just before Christmas 1975. In fairness I must also mention the single All around my hat, as it was seeing the band mime to that on TOTP which first got me interested. Not something I've chosen to listen to in a while, but my life might have been different if I'd never heard that single.

Runners-up
Mavis Staples We'll never turn back
Easily my favouriet new album of 2007

Swan Arcade Matchless
a lost Stoof! and I can't vote for their lost Leader LP(s) as unfortunately I've never heard it/them

Michelle Shocked Short Sharp Shocked
Didn't think much of her songs when Kershaw played tracks from her first LP, but seeing her at a Farnham Folk Day made me realise how good she was. Anchorage, such a simple unpretentious song, still affects me deeply.

I have to admit I've been waiting for this one. Google it, borrow it, buy it - it will make your life better.

Sgiath Airgid by Mary Smith.

The Greatest Singer I've ever heard,

Bar none,

No Sir,

Naebody.

Although my time and place album would be 'It Makes No Nevermind' by Swamptrash - good luck on finding it, but it was the soundtrack to a period of reckless excess and I love that band for it.

In spite of the vast number of S surname people in the world, a very easy choice for me: Joseph Spence. There are many compilations knocking about, but the record I remember with most affection is the second LP that came out called the Real Bahamas. Unbelievable. So that's it

WINNER: THE REAL BAHAMAS Joseph Spence and family etc.

Runner up: Duck Soup (Oh no, that begins with D really, but it seems to be the rule that you mention Dan Quinn as often as possible, whether he firts into the category or not)

I'd been waiting for S, sure I had lots more fRoots-relevant stuff but on scanning my database I actually had very little so:

Runners-up:

The Sawdoctors: If this is Rock'n'Roll I Want My Old Job Back
Ron Sexsmith: Other Songs
Darden Smith: Trouble No More
Simon & Garfunkel: The Collection: (all six albums in a box for £15. Paul Simon's solo work is undoubtedly better but this is a favourites list so it's S & G)
John Spiers & Jon Boden: Tunes

And for my winner, having managed a twofer under O this time I'm going for a threefer:

Steeleye Span: Lark In The Morning (which includes Hark! The Village Wait, Please to See the King and Ten Man Mop)

Lifetime achievers award to Martin Simpson - no doubt Spiers and Boden will merit one eventually but they are far too young as yet

Oh, how could I have missed that one out? (Because it was in the pile of played ones to be re-filed, that's how). Seconded. Except the correct title is Creator Of The Memphis Blues if you mean the Yazoo album.
