Brighton Komedia Studio. 29.04.09 Ray (Chopper) Cooper with Ian Kearey as support

Ian Kearey, a bona fide original , who has illuminated the world of acoustic guitar playing for many years with his sensitive, almost neo-primitive approach, treated us to the audio equivalent of a Turner exhibition. Blending compositions such as "Over the rainbow", "I was the one"(Elvis), "Barbary Allen" and "Pretty Little Pink"(traditional), "Great Dreams"(Joseph Spense) and original compositions "Ome the Unwise" and "Requiem for Blind Joe Death", into a timeless landscape, he held us in his spell. And it was good.
Ray Cooper, only recently come to solo performing, surprised everyone with the power of his voice and the sensitivity of his cello playing. Not many can accompany themselves in this fashion whilst moving and grooving across a stage and his version of "Lord Mayo/ The Rosebuds in June" proved a great opener to a flamboyant set. More than half of the set was original and one in particular, " The Puritan", looks set to become a classic. Others included " My Compass Points to North", " The Dark Days are Over/ Sophie's Polska", "Grey Goose Wing", " In Your Sweet Arms" and " I Kiss the Night". A song by Jimmy Webb, "The Highwayman" and two traditional songs, " The Border Widow's Lament" and McPhearson's Rant" completed the set. The well deserved encore was "Whispering Pines", a classic song by "The Band" served with mellow cello and lonesome voice. A great evening. [/b] |
